Members of Harvard University’s alumni association were horrified after Unabomber Ted Kaczynski posted a sick update for his classmates' 50th reunion this week.

Kaczynski, 70, who graduated from the Ivy League university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1962, killed three people and injuring 23 during a US-wide bombing spree from 1978 to 1995.

In an alumni directory, he lists his occupation as "prisoner" and under awards lists "eight life sentences, issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, 1998".

A Harvard spokesman said the update was submitted by Kaczynski, but could not say how the university confirmed that.

The Harvard Alumni Association said it regretted including the Unabomber's references to his convictions in the directory.

It said all class members were invited to submit entries distributed for reunion activities during commencement week.

"While all members of the class who submit entries are included, we regret publishing Kaczynski's references to his convictions and apologise for any distress that it may have caused others," the association said.

Kaczynski was a Harvard-trained mathematician who also obtained master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan.

He lived as a recluse in a Montana cabin, railed against the effects of advanced technology and led authorities on the nation's longest and costliest manhunt before his brother recognised his idiosyncratic writings and tipped off authorities in 1996.

Kaczynski pleaded guilty two years later to avoid a trial at which his lawyer had planned to offer an insanity defence. His plea also saved him from the death penalty.

Items seized from his cabin were auctioned last year by the US Marshals Service for more than £128,000 to benefit his victims.
