Within hours of being born, Daniel Ey was dead - wrapped in newspaper and dumped, allegedly by his teenaged mother, in an Adelaide driveway.
His mother, Lara Ey, has been charged with manslaughter and criminal neglect over the death.
A committal hearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday heard from doctors who performed a post-mortem examination on the baby.
Dr Cherie Charlwood told the court the cause of death was "unascertained" but likely was due to exposure and hypothermia.
A paediatric pathologist who helped produce the post-mortem examination report, Dr Lynette Moore, said she and Dr Charlwood believed the baby was not stillborn due to aeration in the lungs.
"We felt quite certain that the child had been born alive," Dr Moore said.
Ey was aged 18 when she gave birth to Daniel at home with no medical help.
She was not in court on Monday as the doctors gave evidence at a hearing to determine whether she will be committed to stand trial in the SA Supreme Court.
The hearing was adjourned until October.
