A request to take a dog's temperature was one of more than 2,000 emergency calls received by an ambulance service on New Year's Day.

North West Ambulance Service took 2,265 999 calls until 07:00 GMT on New Year's Day - about one every 10 seconds.

Nearly 550 of these were for serious incidents including assaults, firework injuries and road accidents.

The service said the figure was similar to last year but it was "disappointed" at the number of "inappropriate" calls.

Derek Cartwright, director of emergency services, said "All our staff worked very hard, both in control rooms managing emergency calls, deploying vehicles, and front-line crews tending to patients.

"We will continue to push the message about acting responsibly and the importance of keeping ambulances free to attend to those patients with a genuine medical need."

A dogs temp, gawd good on em. Seems like there is always panic before they think about if it is an emergence or not, it ties up the whole system for those who really need it./.

Running out of toilet roll and having difficulty contacting a Chinese takeaway have been revealed as some of the 999 calls made to Devon and Cornwall Police in 2012.
