Around 10,000 properties in the north east of England are without power because of problems caused by the wintry weather.
Gales have brought down power lines in the region and engineers say they are dealing with about 200 faults.
Travellers were also warned to take care as snow on high ground threatened treacherous conditions.
There were also delays on the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Scotland.
Some homes in Shotley Bridge, County Durham, have been without electricity for three hours.
Northern Power Grid said engineers were working to repair a "higher than usual" number of faults.
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning and drivers have been advised to take care.
The A66 in County Durham has been closed eastbound close to the border with Cumbria due to at least one jackknifed lorry.
Durham Police said it was monitoring the situation regarding the westbound carriageway
