Newquay underage drinkers given alcohol by parents

Seven out of 10 under-age drinkers caught in the Cornish holiday resort of Newquay were given alcohol by their parents, according to police.

Most of the teenagers caught drunk and disorderly said they were sent to Cornwall with alcohol, rather than attempting to buy it in local shops.

Supt Julie Whitmarsh from Devon and Cornwall Police described the statistics as "scary".

Its totally irresponsible to give underage kids alcohol and its an even bigger scandal when its their parents that are doing it. We've all allowed our 16 and 17 year old the odd glass of something on special occasions but what goes on now goes well beyond that. Even if parents are not giving them alcohol directly, they are the ones keeping them supplied with money so that they can buy it. Kids seem to have endless amounts of money nowadays so its hardly surprising that they're gonna buy booze and fags with it when all their friends are doing it. It seems to me that kids get a bit too much freedom and way too much money these days. Showing me age now.
