internet 'could kill jury system'

The jury system may not survive if it is undermined by social networking sites, England's top judge has said.

In a lecture published on Friday the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, raised major concerns about the use of the internet by jurors.

He said: "If the jury system is to survive as the system for a fair trial... the misuse of the internet by jurors must stop."

I can understand their concerns but I can't see an easy way to stop this happening. I do think that courts take too long to deal with cases so maybe cutting out some of the falderall that goes on in court would help that situation. I sat on a jury a couple of years ago and the case went on for 3 days. The actual stuff to do with the case didn't take any more than about 5 hours in total but with all the other garbage that surrounds court cases it stretched into three days. Apart from the money it costs to keep everyone coming back and paying expenses, if this was shortened there would be less time for jurors to discuss cases on the internet or anywhere else. There is more time wasted in courts than is used.
