Ghost Planes on the Peak District
Over 50 planes crashed in the Sheffield Peaks during World War II, and over 300 people lost their lives as a result. Ghostly sightings of airmen have been reported.
On a cold, clear night in Sheffield in 1997, some people were out on the Moors looking for the comet Hale Bopp. But as well as the comet, they got an extra surprise.
Witnesses saw a propeller-driven plane flying low. One farmer ducked instinctively as the plane passed over his head.
The aircraft seemed to be in difficulty, and they saw it apparently crash in the moors.
They called 999, and a rescue operation was launched, but no plane or crash was found despite the efforts of 100 police and volunteers.
