Scotland’s chief prisons inspector has criticised the lack of programmes to reintegrate sex offenders back into society.
Chief Inspector of Prisons, Brigadier Hugh Monro, repeated his calls for a national sex offenders strategy so inmates can access rehabilitation programmes before their release.
In his annual report for 2010-11, he said during his inspection of Peterhead Prison over a two-year period only nine prisoners had progressed to a low supervision “top end” facility or the open estate prior to release, while 150 were released directly into the community from their local jails.
“Given the need to rehabilitate sex offenders as safely as possible in order to reduce risks, I believe we need to revisit this very thorny issue, not just at prison level but at national and community level,” he said.
