| We called it Paddys Miles stane half way between home and Girvan, sometimes the cloud was so low it covered the top of ailsa craig and sometimes it had mist on the island which rose in the heat of the sun, up through the middle and it looked like a tie, hence the saying, Paddy wi a hat and it's gonna be wat(wet) Paddy wi a tie and it's gonna be dry. It was true as well strangely enough. Still in business as far as i know. |

| Hi cookie...........I live about 7 miles from Ailsa Hospital. Yes its still open and its still a psychiatric hospital. Its a lot bigger than it used to be because they keep adding bits on. The only picture I can find is this one and its not very big. This is the entrance and gatehouse which has been there since ever I can remember. Craigie college is still there as well. It used to be a teacher training college but I think they do all sorts of stuff now. I'm guessing you're from Ayr or thereabouts. :D _________________ The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas! I'm guessing you're from Ayr or thereabouts. :D Hi mazzie, that's near where i come from originally as well, not nearly as near as you mind, I have'nt always lived in the far north of Scotland, i was born in Kimarnock and lived there for 43 years. Many a happy memory i have of Ayr and Preswick as well, I even worked in the indoor market i Ayr for abourt 4 years. It's a small world is'nt it. ;) |

| Killie, that would be the one they called Petticoat Lane. :D I'd forgotten about that. It had a great wee tea shop. Its all been redeveloped now and its a big health centre that's on the site. _________________ The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas! | I never knew it by that name, Mazzie it was at the top of the street(i don't remember the name) and the ritz video rental shop was next door. I know it used to be McCorquodales furniture before they moved to bigger premises in Dalry and became Dales of Dalry. I also remember that when you crossed the road straight ahead, when coming out of the market, you went into a shopping arcade that came straight through to the High Street. When i was leaving to go work elsewhere, i recall another market nearby just opening, is that maybe Petticoat lane. The one i worked in was a huge building and was always called 'Ayr Indoor Market.' |

| Yes Killie, thats the one. They called it Petticoat Lane not long before it shut down. It was a lot smaller by then and there was one of those play places for kids (Playstation, they called it) It took up a huge chunk of the market area but by that time there were less stalls. The video rental place was next door. That street is called Dalblair Road. Straight across the road is a shopping arcade which is now called 'Arran Mall' (it used to be Dalblair Arcade) and it's now joined onto the Kyle Centre by a walkway (that's another shopping arcade) There's been a huge number of changes to Ayr in the last 20 years, you probably wouldn't recognise the place now. :D _________________ The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas! | not from Ayr but ayrshire lass..I'm now a doon hamer (dumfriesshire)..when I went to craigie college it was to to admin and book keeping..accounts and all that boring stuff..I used to get off the bus at the graveyard and cross the bridge and walk through the trees to get to the college (can't see me trying that nowadays )..I also worked in a small shop in Ayr behind the train station..I cant for the life of me remember what it was called (I'm sure it'll come to me around 3 am while I'm trying to sleep ) but is sold clothes for an older lady and bowling clothing (the green bowling not the ten pin)..went to Ayr a few years ago and there was a large shopping area where some old shops used to be and the picture house looked a mess | |

| You live in one of the nicest parts of Scotland in my opinion cookie. I've spent a lot of time in the Dumfries and galloway area and it can't be beaten. :D
I remember the shop you're talking about, it sold all those grey pleated skirts and white jackets that the lady bowlers wore. It was there for years. Can't remember what it was called but it been closed now for a long time. It certainly couldn't have been described as ladies fashions. :D :D
The only picture house that's still in use is the Odeon just across from the station. The others have all gone down the tubes. There used to be four in Ayr and one in Prestwick. People are more inclined to go to Kilmarnock now to the large cinema complex there. _________________ The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas! | the one in burn's statue square..it was the odeon I think..is westsound radio still there..it was next to the graveyard..sorry for all the questions but it's bringing back so many memories for me ..I can remember a friend buying a secondhand sofa from a place down behind the swimming pool..cost him £15 and they took it down to the beach and sat on it all day ..and the shop that got knocked down for that new shopping place was called panache and it sold all those rock tshirts and badges and was always full of dodgy looking mullet types..but was run by old ladies..i loved that place | |

| Westsound is still there at the main gate into the Cemetery.
I've spent the last few days trying to remember the name of that shop..........Panache....... thanks for that. It came up in conversation a few days ago and none of us could remember its name. It was a tiny shop, sold all the rock stuff, belt buckles and tie-dye clothes. The girl I worked with was a mosher and she loved that shop as well. :D _________________ The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!
