Monday Feb 23, 2009 marked the 100th anniversary of flight in Canada (and the British Empire, as Canada is still bound to the queen)
Feb 23, 1909 saw the Silver Dart, a bi-plane built by the Aerial Experiment Association, take off from the frozen Bras d'Or Lake at Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia. The AEA was composed of five gentlemen, world famous Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, J.A.D. McCurdy, who would pilot the airplane, Thomas Selfridge, who would eventually become the first person to die in a plane crash, Glenn Curtiss and Frederick W. "Casey" Baldwin. Their hope was to build and fly a heavier-than-air, manned, mechanically powered aircraft. They succeeded.
This past weekend was the Centennial celebrations here in Baddeck. And although a storm forecast for the anniversary date threw a wrench into the plans, the re-enactment flight went ahead on the 22nd to thousands of onlookers. I was lucky enough to get several photos of the Silver Dart in flight as well as a video :D
