A WOMAN who tried to cure her health problems 10 years ago by drilling a hole in her head has died of a drug overdose, an inquest heard.
Heather Perry, 41, from Gloucester, took a Black and Decker drill to her skull on live American TV in 2002 because she believed it would cure her depression.
Miss Perry was one of only a handful of people to undertake the bizarre surgical practice known as trepanning.
Heather was desperate to cure her chronic fatigue syndrome and had heard that John Lennon had once talked of attempting it.
Watched by a film crew, she stood in front of a mirror and injected local anaesthetic into the crown of her head.
Then she used a surgeon's knife to cut away a section of her scalp before using the electric drill.
But the public demonstration ended dramatically when she had to be rushed to hospital after drilling too deep and severing a membrane protecting brain tissue.
