Bob Dylan
"Tempest"
Our rating: Our Rating 10/10
Whereas 2009's "Together Through Life" radiated late-afternoon warmth, it's follow-up assumes a more crepuscular character, starting off upbeat ("Duquesne Whistle") but soon descending into darkness; a murderous love triangle ("Tin Angel"), the sinking of the Titanic ("Tempest"), and a John Lennon homage ("Roll on John") comprise the album's final third. Death and disaster are timeworn staples of American song, and "Tempest" surveys styles with a breadth reminiscent of Dylan's "Theme Time Radio Hour" programs, unspooling an old-timey mélange of blues, jazz and classic country to drive the restless limbs of the everyday tragedians and sharp-dressed ne'er-do-wells who populate this absorbing album. - Kurt B.
