| Subject: Deep-fried Mars bars: A symbol of a nation's diet? Thu Sep 06, 2012 3:08 pm | |
| The deep-fried Mars bar has become a worldwide symbol of all that is wrong with the high-fat, high-sugar Scottish diet. But do people really eat them or is it a novelty item which has unfairly taken on a wider significance?
The Economist newspaper recently ran a feature on Glasgow's health record under the headline "No city for old men".
It was just the latest in a long line of news story to cite "an excessive love of deep-fried Mars bars" to represent all that is wrong with the eating habits of a city and - by extension - a nation.

| I had to stop doing the deep fried mars bars, the customers loved them, but the staff had a habit of overcooking them.. one fryer full of fat = around $60.00.. if the mars bars were overcooked, they stuffed up the fat.. it started costing some serious coin when it happened 2 or 3 times a night.. if it happened on a busy night, it cost a lot of business because a fryer would be out of action for at least 30 minutes while the fat got changed and reheated.. a pity because they were quite popular, just like mushy pea's... | |
