A man walks into a bar with a zebra and a parrot… believe it or not, this isn’t the start of a joke.
Police in Iowa arrested an intoxicated man on suspicion of drink-driving after he was spotted behind the wheel with his pet zebra and macaw on the front seat.
Jerald Reiter, 55, was arrested outside the Dog House Bar and Lounge in Ankeny, near Des Moines, after a passerby saw his unusual pets parked in his pick-up truck outside.
As officers arrived at the scene, Reiter was driving away with the zebra and parrot in tow, according to local station WTVR.
According to police, field sobriety tests showed the pet owner had a blood alcohol level of .14, almost twice the legal limit in Iowa, and he was charged with operating while intoxicated.
Reiter told KCRG.com that he and his girlfriend, Vickey Teter, treat the animals like their children and often take them out for rides.
You'll never guess who I had in the back of my car: Cows, tigers, bears, alligators and cigar-smoking dogs hitching a lift
