The UK will fund Afghan security forces after British combat operations in their country cease in 2014, the defence secretary has said.
Philip Hammond said the UK would give £70m a year to a £4bn international fund to stop Afghanistan once again becoming a "safe haven" for terrorists.
Speaking at a Nato meeting in Brussels, he said the first £70m payment would be made in 2015.
UK troops have been in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion in 2001.
Mr Hammond said: "The UK contribution of £70m per annum to the funds to support the Afghan National Security Forces will make Afghanistan a safer and more stable country and protect our own national interests.
