you should be able to see one this week as its the closest to earth in 40yrs weve got ryans big telescope set up,but they say even though its 21million light yrs away you should be able to see it,with binoculars

according to the san francisco chronicle (I'll put the link up) you can see it for two nights and at the bottom of the story it says starting dusk on saturday (that'll be their time) but sounds like it could be the weekend and thought the bbc said it was there now..I would keep checking the internet as it'll be one of those last minute things with somebody shouting it's there now
